Desertification
Desertification is a process by which
land becomes increasingly dry until almost no vegetation grows on it, making it
a desert. Desertification is often thought of as being associated with drought,
but while land degradation might proceed more rapidly during drought, the real
causes of desertification include natural climate variation, the overall
inappropriate management of land (drought or no), ignoring normal climate
variability in land management and the natural limitations of the land itself.
In reality, drought is one of the risks associated with human occupation of
arid lands where climate is largely unpredictable.
